How to Use Email Analytics for Email Intelligence
By William Johnson Do you consider successful email delivery the only job an email marketing tool should perform for you? Are you happy with the macro-level statistics – open Rate, click rate, bounce rate, and unsubscribed rate that any common tool provides you? And is the derived information enough to move your email marketing objectives to the next level? Does your existing email service help you in better campaign monitoring and reduce manual tasks while applying email marketing intelligence? Modern email marketing goes beyond email database management or open rate and click rate analysis. Now, it is more about knowing your audience better and reaching them with precision. Maximizing email engagement and increasing actionable components are the top most priorities of running any email campaign. It s the email derived data reproduced with marketing intelligence and presented in an easily understandable graphical format that maximizes your ROI. An email marketing manager not only n

Customer Service Lessons from a Jacksonville Taxi Driver
By Annie Pilon Providing great customer service is vital whether your business is a world-class resort or a small corner store. When you see a business create a superior customer experience, there likely are lessons that you can take away regardless of whether or not that business is in your industry. Such is the case with Taxi Terry, a cab driver in Jacksonville, Florida. Taxi Terry is well-known in the area for providing great customer service. And now, he s gaining notoriety even outside the Jacksonville area thanks to a book written by Scott McKain, 7 Tenets of Taxi Terry. In the book, McKain writes about his own experience riding in Terry s cab, along with some lessons that entrepreneurs can learn from him. And while the chances of you providing the same type of transportation service as Terry are pretty slim, the lessons are applicable across most other industries as well. One of the top lessons that McKain drew from his chance encounter with Taxi Terry was how he laid the groun

Ways Your Small Business Can Capitalize on the Internet of Things
By Pierre DeBois Note: The following is coverage of the Solid conference, with a specific focus on micro-manufacturing trends that are arising from IOT, trends on which small businesses can capitalize. What if I told you that your next business venture may involve manufacturing a car? Or that your next startup will include the programming of microbes? Those ideas, according to the O Reilly Solid conference, are not only within reach, but are progressing rapidly into reality today. I attended the conference to view presentations for new combinations of manufacturing, biology, and programming. These concepts, rooted in Internet of Things (IoT) tech, stirs grand imaginations of devices making people s lives easier. The ideas can also stir how your next business idea can be best positioned for a significant industry shift rather than a mere customer trend. When most people hear or read IoT, they rightly think of consumer devices such as the Nest thermostat. But through keynotes and shared

5 Key Product Enhancements for Marketers from HubSpot Inbound 2015
By Brent Leary This week 14,000 people descended on Boston for HubSpot s annual conference, Inbound Inbound 2015. That s a far cry from the 200 to 300 people attending the very first Inbound in 2008, which I had the pleasure of participating in as a speaker. But this year, attending with my analyst hat on, I was impressed with the quantity and quality of announcements and enhancements HubSpot delivered. Here are five HubSpot product improvements that marketers and any small business wanting to improve its online marketing may find of interest: HubSpot Ads Add-on HubSpot co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah said during his keynote that 53 percent of its customers use some form of paid advertising. And, if HubSpot customer trends are in line with the general digital advertising trends, that number is probably on the rise. The new Ads add-on tool gives HubSpot customers the ability to create and manage Google AdWords and LinkedIn Sponsored Updates campaigns. With this new add-on, customers w

How Mobile Advertising Differs from All Other Ad Formats
By Annie Pilon Mobile advertising is one of the fastest growing facets of digital marketing. But just as you and your team are likely trying to develop a mobile ad strategy, so are plenty of other competing businesses. Simply coming up with some ads that work on mobile screens isn t quite enough. You have to develop ads that really appeal to your customers. To marketers that have created ads for other mediums, this may sound like a recycled message. But the mobile medium is different than any other. When advertising on television or radio, your message is likely to be seen or heard by multiple people at the same time, in the same room, potentially with other distractions around. When advertising in print or on desktop, there are plenty of other things on the page or screen that can also steal attention away from your ad. Mobile ads are more likely to be the only thing that a person is looking at on that particular screen in that particular moment. It s that moment that you need to cap

Facebook Gives Pages for Business a Mobile Friendly Update
By Tabby McFarland Mobile can feel like it s taking over. It s not always enough for a business to just be online. Now it s becoming important to also be mobile friendly and connected to social media. But in the world of social media, “Likes” do not always equate to conversions. Facebook recently announced changes to Pages. That s the company s platform used by some businesses to create a specialized page to promote their services. The new updates are geared towards making it easier for users to create a mobile-friendly and more customized Page. In particular, the new updates will be good for small to medium-sized businesses. Facebook says in the post about the new updates: “The new features for Pages reflect our belief that no matter if you re a plumbing company, a flower shop, a non-profit or a brand, your Page should house the information people are looking for, help you communicate with your customers and support your unique goals.” Facebook is now making it possible for b

With Great Customer Loyalty Comes Great Responsibility
By Annie Pilon A popular adage in the business community is that it s cheaper to keep an existing customer than it is to gain a new customer. For that reason, businesses tend to put a lot of emphasis on building customer loyalty. While customer loyalty is certainly an admirable goal, it s one that also comes with added responsibility. Andrew McDermott, co-founder of HooktoWin used a personal anecdote to explain a situation that businesses often encounter with loyal customers. He wrote in an article on Fox Business: “Our best friend just bought a car. And he s in big trouble. Why you ask? He did it without talking to his wife. He picked it up after work then drove it home. He thought it would be a surprise, that she d be happy. But you know how this story ends. His wife was angry, really angry. ‘How could you do that without me? You should have talked it over with me before making such a big decision. And suddenly he s in the dog house.” In this way, loyal customers are a lot lik

36 Percent of Smartphone Owners Use Messaging Apps, Says Research
By Ed Lieber Small business owners seeking to use social media to connect with customers may want to take a closer look at mobile messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Kik, and iMessage. Those are among the more popular types of apps that smartphone owners are using, according to a recent study by Pew Research Center. Specifically, these messaging apps are most popular among young-adult users, the survey says, It notes that nearly half (49 percent) of smartphone owners ages 18 to 29 use these apps. While 41 percent use apps such as Snapchat or Wickr which automatically delete sent messages after a short time. Including adult respondents, the survey says 36 percent of smartphone owners reported using those mobile messaging apps, while 17 percent said they used temporary messaging apps like Snapchat and Wickr. Campaign Furniture Markets Quality on a Budget
By Annie Pilon If you ve ever experienced the headache of assembling your own furniture, particularly from low-budget stores like Ikea, then you understand the frustrations of Brad Sewell. Sewell, a former Apple engineer, moved from California to Boston for business school a few years ago. And he had difficulty finding furniture that fit somewhere between IKEA s inexpensive, do-it-yourself model and the high-end stores that weren t exactly affordable. He explained to Entrepreneur: “I had this taste in quality, but a budget that was like ‘graduated IKEA. There wasn t much between your disposable furniture and the really high-end stuff.” He knew that there had to be a way to make and ship furniture so that it was both high quality and easy to assemble. So, in 2012, he started his own furniture company, Campaign. He even left Harvard Business School to focus on the project. Sprint, AT&T Competition Could Mean Lower Fees
By JoAnn McFarland Sprint is using the AT&T acquisition of DirecTV to lure a competitor s customers away. To mark the occasion, Sprint is offering current customers of DirecTV a free year of service. In the release, Kevin Crull, Chief Marketing Officer of Sprint says: “DIRECTV customers love their TV service – but they shouldn t have to settle for AT&T wireless. Why not build the perfect bundle by combining with Sprint wireless? We re winning awards across the country because our network has never been stronger, faster or more reliable, and our customers have never been more satisfied.” This is absolutely in the spirit of competition in the marketplace and could lead to better prices for the customer — including small businesses. It s the spirit that used to be demonstrated in gas station wars, where stations in the same neighborhood competed for the lowest price. This sometimes went to the extreme of the stronger business outlasting the other in selling at less than cost, lea
